The other thing as well is that there's nothing particularly special about her either - not super intelligent, incredibly beautiful or talented at anything, just pretty average. Her weight and body shape is slightly more realistic than the typical Hollywood standard, her face is constantly ruddy and her hair styles are pretty standard but she does her best with what she has and made it easy to relate with at times - for instance having to wear awful underwear because they make you thinner. I know Bridget Jones isn't about her weight but I do see it as being "average". It's still a stretch that she ended up with Zac Efron who was/is a major heartthrob but I still bought her ending up with a guy more attractive than she was.Īnd the movie didn't draw attention to it either, they just kinda let it happen. Meaning, the girls really weren't unattractive at all, the movie just put them in plain clothing and told the audience she was average even though she wasn't. I googled "movies where an unattractive girl gets a hot guy" and most of the examples I found were of Hollywood homely girls getting hot guys. There are countless movies where people like Jonah Hill or Jack Black get girls who could easily make it as supermodels but Hairspray did the opposite and it's still one of the very, very few.
